Meet Guillermo Vasquez, who has just joined the Homework Central Board, but he has been a part of the HWC family since his high school years! |
|
|
Guillermo started serving HWC students as a high school student tutor, where he saw the immense difference he was making. After college, he continued the association as a Site Coordinator at Sunnybrae, where he fostered relationships with teachers, administrators, and parents / caregivers, while working daily with our students. In his words, "I consider HWC as family....I understand the value of fostering academic success through tutoring and family support because I have been gifted this support myself by the same community I want to contribute to. As I recognize the positive influence these experiences have had on my life, I want to continue to be a part of the Homework Central mission toward helping all the children in our village achieve their own success."
Guillermo currently works for an organization that supports first-generation college aspirants on college and career readiness. He has volunteered with other local organizations: as a Peninsula Bridge mentor of students aspiring for college, and as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) of San Mateo County, building relationships of trust with youth who have experienced abuse or neglect. He is a part of the Latino Community Foundation's Bay Area Men's Giving Circle.
A warm welcome to Guillermo as he joins the HWC board! |

San Mateo Park School is 100!!
Homework Central was privileged to be a part of the celebrations on the 100th day of the 100th year of San Mateo Park Elementary School. Past and present people connected with Park - SMFCSD leadership (including past superintendent Dr Joan Rosas), Principals, teachers and staff, PTA members and students participated in this celebration spread over 2 student assemblies. Supervisor Noelia Corzo, who had been a Park student herself, spoke in the second assembly about her being the first Latina elected to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. She encouraged the students to aim high and stay involved in the community. The program ended with an interactive and fun Taiko drumming performance by San Jose Taiko.
To commemorate this event, a Timeline Link and an Anniversary video were released. In the timeline (at 5:01), you will see that Homework Central first started serving Park students in 1998! Congratulations on the milestone 100th birthday, Park School!

Literacy Family Night (Dec 2024) Literacy Family Night
Homework Central hosted a Literacy themed Family Night in December — a record number of 175 attendees (students, their parents, caregivers and siblings, HWC site leaders and board members) enjoyed a dinner of salad, pasta and pizza, with cookies for dessert, at Kloss Hall, CCSM (Congregational Church of San Mateo). A literacy activity, a book giveaway to our students and their siblings, and a raffle of several brand new donated Lego sets made the event fun.
A big thank you to UUSM (Unitarian Universalists of San Mateo) and ALSM (Assistance League of San Mateo) who, between them, donated a total of 240 new and almost-new books, 38 used books and 120 card games. The books and games were received with great joy by our students and their siblings! |
