| Volunteer Spotlight
You are likely to meet Michael Steele at HWC in San Mateo Park School — without fail, for the last five years, once or twice a week, he has been helping students read, write or do math. |
|
|
After retiring from an executive position, Michael wanted to give back to the community—initially he was concerned that this volunteering position might be just babysitting after school but he realized that he was actually making a big difference by tutoring and mentoring students. He appreciates that HWC supports students facing various inequities including economic. A recollection about this? A student wrote as a response to a prompt on “My Dream Bedroom” that she wanted a blanket to herself, because at home she always needed to share a blanket with her sister. His greatest reward? Seeing the sense of accomplishment on the students’ faces when they solve a problem and “get it.”

A Fantastic Family Night at CuriOdyssey
CuriOdyssey hosted a science themed Family Night on February 21st for HWC students and families on their campus, and it was a roaring success!! The CuriOdyssey team counted our largest Family Night attendance ever, at 172 attendees, who came and enjoyed a visit to the zoo, shared a healthy dinner, and worked on a science activity. It was a loud, fun, happy event for all. The icing on the cake was that families were invited to sign up for sending their child to the wonderful CurOdyssey summer camp, free of charge!! Everyone who signed up, got accepted.
Thank you CuriOdyssey! And thank you to all the families that took time from their busy week to come and have some fun with their children and other families. |
New Outfits For Our Students
About a month ago, 30 HWC students from Laurel School went with their parent/caregiver to pick out, try on, and take home some new clothes at no cost. Our partner Assistance League of San Mateo offered new clothing items through its Operation School Bell. Each student could take home 2 pairs of pants, 2 shirts, 1 sweatshirt, socks and undergarments. The joy on our students' faces was a sight to see! And this month, 30-40 HWC students from Baywood will experience this joy as well! Our heartfelt thanks to Assistance League.
Our partnership with Assistance League of San Mateo has been so rewarding – over the last few years they have donated funds for snacks and sports equipment for our students, food for family nights, and games/enrichment activities. Thank you Karen Mead, Maureen Boland, Caryl Hughan and many others at the Assistance League whose friendship and partnership we deeply value. |
