HWC Site Coordinator

Homework Central (HWC) is a community-based, educational nonprofit that provides after school tutoring to students who are mostly English language learners, and provides support to their families.   The organization has helped countless San Mateo elementary children become successful students in school for over 18 years.  Our goal is to create a community oflife-long learners.

HWC operates four homework sites, four days/week, with each site accommodating third through fifth grade students.  The Site Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to provide a safe, secure, pleasant, and nurturing environment where children can complete homework and improve their fundamental skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and technology.


  • Provide a safe and supportive environment for students, student aides, and volunteers during tutoring sessions;
  • Communicate with parents. Inform them about student achievements and concerns;
  • Build strong relationships with the principal and teachers at elementary school(s) attended by students;
  • Assign volunteer tutors and student aides to students on a daily basis, and provide ongoing supervision;
  • Mentor high school and college student aides and support volunteer tutors;
  • Ensure all students are able to use Chromebooks on a regular schedule;
  • Observe and monitor each student’s progress and note areas for improvement;
  • Record and maintain student attendance;
  • Organize and distribute healthy snacks for students daily;
  • Encourage parents to be “snack angels” and bring in non-perishable items;
  • Report any needed repairs and site needs to Executive Director;
  • Provide and maintain supplemental materials (books for reading, multiplication fact sheets, etc.) for students to use when they have completed their homework assignments;
  • Set up, organize, store, and maintain materials for each Homework Central day;
  • Submit written monthly progress reports to the Board of Directors;
  • Report all necessary information to both Executive Director and Volunteer Coordinator;
  • Organize fall parent and tutor orientations for the site;
  • Attend monthly Homework Central staff meetings, tutor training sessions, parent education evenings, and a retreat;
  • Prepare and set-up for parent education evenings, volunteer tea, end of year party, and other tasks as assigned.


  • Department of Justice fingerprint clearance
  • BS or BA degree; strong preference for credentialed teachers
  • Computer literacy; knowledge of educational software for elementary students a plus
  • Experience working with elementary age children
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-starter and problem solver
  • Spanish language skills preferred
